The teaching requirement may be satisfied at any time. As a matter of policy, a student should satisfy half of the teaching requirement in the first two years.
Students are encouraged to complete the teaching requirement early in their stay to eliminate conflicts with later dissertation work. The research requirement is routinely satisfied by participation in research throughout the student's career. Note: Any form that requires Department Chair's signature should be submitted to the PhD student services office in Gates PhD Program Officer approves those forms on behalf of the department chair.
University policy requires that all doctoral students declare candidacy by the end of the sixth quarter in residence, excluding summers. Once you have a permanent advisor and have completed the breadth requirements and the three units of coursework with four instructors faculty that are academic council members you are eligible to file for candidacy.
